Roscrea Girl Wins Essay Competition

1st Place Senior Prizewinner in the Concern Worldwide essay competition Louise Burke from Glenbeha, Roscrea at launch of book 'Dispatches From the Developing World' by charity Concern at Newman House, Dublin. MT48246
Louise Burke from Glenbeha, Roscrea and a student at Ursuline Convent Thurles, won the senior section in the Concern Worldwide essay competition telling the story of Sasmita, a little boy who lives in the slums of Calcutta.
The quality of the writing was of such a high standard that Deputy Editor of The Irish Times, Denis Staunton and Political Correspondent of The Irish Daily Star, Catherine Halloran, jokingly expressed concern for their jobs at the launch of Dispatches From The Developing World at Newman House on Wednesday evening.
Mr Staunton who launched the Concern Worldwide essay compilation and Catherine Halloran, who was one of the judges, spoke of the extraordinary high standard of writing and how the aspiring journalists might well move into senior jobs in the world of journalism.
This was the fourth year of the writing competition and entrants were asked to imagine they were foreign correspondents working in the developing world for a newspaper. They were to write a piece on their experience in the field.
The book is a compilation of the winning essays with extracts from another 80 essays. There were over 800 entrants to the competition.
The essays were judged by Lara Marlowe of The Irish Times, Mick Clifford, a columnist with The Irish Examiner and Sunday Times, Patricia Harty, editor of The Irish America Magazine and Catherine Halloran.
Ms Halloran recommended the book as a great Christmas read. It is edited by Concern's Michael Doorly and published by Liffey Press.
