Portumna Dogs Stolen From Animal Shelter
Thursday, 15 December 2011
Five dogs were stolen from an animal sanctuary in Portumna last Saturday, after thieves ransacked the facility.
The Galway Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is calling for the return of the five dogs, some of which had just undergone major surgery and in serious need of follow-up veterinary care and medication.
The facility, based in Heathlawn, Portumna, also suffered the loss of its stock of leads, collars and other pet-care items, while windows were shattered and property extensively damaged.
In a plea to the public for the return of the dogs, Margaret O'Sullivan, PRO of Galway SPCA, told the Tribune that the Gardaí are following all leads and she urgently appeals for the return of the dogs: 'Such a horrific thing to happen to these poor animals who have already been through so much in their lives. Please don't be silent, we need to get these animals back. These animals will be no use to anyone, as sadly they stole the ones that need immediate care.'
The five dogs go by the names Curley (male curley-haired terrier cross, approx four-years-old, black and tan colour), Knutt (male Huskey, grey and white, tail noticebly curved to the left), Patty (female black-haired Patterdale, bald patch where is missing over left eye), Raccal (male white haired terrier, two stitches on his nose, approx 18-months old) and Mooney (female black and tan colour, two toes missing off her hind and needs veterinary care urgently).
Portumna Gardaí say they are in the early stages of investigating the theft of the dogs and say they have no definite leads on the motive behind the robbery. The dogs are micro-chipped and anyone with information is asked to contact Portumna Garda Station on (090) 9741 004 or any Garda Station.
