Thursday, 22 December 2011

WHEN the mother of 12-year-old Niamh Mahon from the Elms in Spollenstown, heard that Jedward were helping to make dreams come true for young people she immediately wrote on behalf of her daughter.
'OMG! Jedward's Dream Factory' is a brand new young people's entertainment programme, and will be broadcast as a ten part series on RTÉ Two from St. Stephen's Day. The show will air every day until Wednesday 4th January 2012.
Niamh Mahon has always loved horses and takes riding lessons at Annaharvey Farm. Meanwhile she is hoping to be a guard when she leaves school and has ambitions to join the Garda Mounted unit.
So with that in mind her mother wrote to the makers of the programme asking could her daughter spend the day with the unit.
Some time later she was contacted by the producers and invited to spend a day with the Mounted Garda Unit in the Phoenix Park.Niamh jumped at the chance and as a result had a wonderful day.
'We arrived at Aras an Uachtarain at 8am where we met the director of the programme and Garda Sgt Brendan Duffy an native of Birr who is over the unit.' said Niamh.
'He showed us around the grounds and the stables and we met the horses, I groomed them and mucked out the stables and fed them. It was cool,' added Niamh.
Then she was mounted on garda horse Cumhall and went for lunging or nuisance training. This involved the horses stepping over people who were lying prostrate on the ground which might occur in a protest situation. The horses were also required to step through tyres.
Niamh was dressed in Garda gear and and she got to go out through the Phoenix Park. Her day finished at around 3pm. Then she went to the RTE studios where there were crowds waiting to catch a glimpse of Jedward. Niamh had lunch in the canteen and was delighted to see the cast of Fair City and Ryan Tubridy.
Then it was time for her television appearance with Jedward who asked her about her dream and chatted to her for a while.
The programme featuring Niamh will be shown on RTE on New Year's Eve at 11am and repeated at 6pm.
