ST. BRENDAN'S Community School, Birr, officially launched their school bank recently. The event was attended by Marcella Corcoran Kennedy TD, a host of local business people and Midland's Radio 3. A first year student, Emma Mulrooney, won a competition to select the name of the new school bank 'Future Fortunes.'
This year St. Brendan's are participating in a national competition called the AIB Build a Bank Challenge, which is incidentally celebrating its 10th anniversary. Six Transition Year students were chosen to set up, run and manage a completely authentic and functioning bank branch in the school with the support of AIB, which is not only an advantageous experience, but also actively encourages salutary financial management with students, including regular saving, budgeting and utilising new ways to bank, including AIB phone and internet banking.
The Transition Year team consists of six positions - John Burke as Bank Manager, Leanne Madden as Assistant Manager, Caroline Kealey is Auditor, Shaun Hogan as Sales and Marketing Executive and Laura Dunne and Oisín Clarke are the team's two tellers. They were chosen after a rigorous interviewing process. By the end of the year they will have gained experience in money management, key business skills, marketing techniques, literary skills, interpersonal skills, customer service skills, leadership, teamwork and technology skills.
In the initiative, Future Fortunes are targeting students between the ages of 12 and 18 involved in a second level education. AIB are offering a specially catered for Student Account to meet the needs of students. This student account gives students instant access and control over their money, it's designed to fit in the way they live their life. Students can use the account for day-to-day needs and can also use it to save some money for the future. The Bank will be operating every Tuesday from 1p.m. to 1.30p.m.
Future Fortunes will also be running many competitions and as seasonal promotions throughout the year and self-explanatorily only account holders will be able to partake in these and be in with a chance to win the many different prizes up for grabs.
Thanks to teachers, Ms. Sabrina Carroll, who facilitated this process, and Ms. Dolores Morkan, TY Co-ordinator.
