153,000 Allocated For Flood Mitigation Works At Portavolla

Thursday, 3 November 2016

€153,000 has been allocated to Offaly County Council to carry major flood mitigation works at Portavolla, Banagher.

This funding will allow the construction of a clay embankment around the perimeter of the Portavolla Estate and the diversion of the existing drain at the rear of the estate. The works will also include the option of a pumping facility if needed during a flood event.

The news has been welcomed by Minister for Health Promotion, Marcella Corcoran Kennedy TD and by Deputy Barry Cowen TD.

Minister Corcoran Kennedy said 'I am delighted with announcement by the Minister for the Office of Public Works and Flood Relief, Sean Canney TD that €153,000 is being offered to Offaly County Council to carry out vital flood mitigation works at Portavolla, Banagher.

'The flooding at Portavolla was very challenging for the residents and I very much welcome this funding. I visited the area myself last year during the flooding and I saw the staff from Offaly County Council working so hard to keep the water at bay.

'It was particularly distressing for the homeowners who had to deal with water coming into their homes. I have made continuous representations to the OPW in relation to the flooding threat at Portavolla and I am very pleased that this funding offer will allow significant protections to be constructed in the area. I look forward to seeing the works commence shortly,' she said.

Deputy Cowen said 'Following on-going representations I am delighted to be advised by the Minister of State for OPW and Flood Relief that funding of €153,000 has been made available to Offaly County Council for works to Portavolla, Banagher to include the following: Construction of a clay embankment around the perimeter of Portavolla and also the diversion of an existing drain from the rear of the houses to the outside of the new boundary with a facility to over pump during a flood event.'
