High Speed Garda Chase Through Tipperary & Offaly

Thursday, 3 November 2016

A HIGH SPEED car chase across four counties, including Tipperary and Offaly, came to a dramatic end in the early hours of Friday morning in County Limerick after Gardai apprehended a 14-year-old who had stolen a car.

The chase, which startled people in Roscrea, and surrounding areas of Killavilla, Dungar and Mountheathon, began when the 14-year-old escaped from a care facility in Mountrath on Thursday afternoon and stole the keys of a staff member's VW Passat.

The youth, who was described by Gardai as barely capable of seeing over the car's steering wheel, led the Gardai on a chase in the early hours involving several Garda patrol cars.

Many residents of Roscrea and surrounding areas were awoken shortly after 2a.m. by Garda patrol car sirens as the chase wound through narrow country roads on the town's periphery.

Gardai were forced to close the M7 motorway between Roscrea and Limerick City while they pursued the car through Tipperary, Offaly, Laois and Limerick, where a Garda roadblock ended the chase near the city.

The youth driving the car was not injured in the incident and was later taken into the care of the HSE.

Gardai said the youth claimed they stole the vehicle with the intention of 'going home.'
