Incidents Of Illegal Dumping At Several Birr Locations thumbnailA microwave dumped at Rock Lane, Birr. MT01273DF

THE blight of illegal refuse dumping has occurred at several locations in Birr during the post-Christmas period.
Cllr Seán Maher told the Tribune that he went for a recreational stroll around the town and was upset to see rubbish dumped at several places.
The sites included Hollypark, Rock Lane, An Corran in Crinkle and Croghan Bridge.
'I have no doubt,' commented Cllr Maher, 'that this is only the start of the post Christmas dumping and would urge residents to act responsibly and dispose of rubbish in a proper manner.'
He also asked members of the public not to touch any fly tipping but report any illegal dumping to the local authorities so they can investigate.
'The area in Hollypark is a very scenic area of Birr and I will be asking that CCTV be installed to help prevent what is an annual problem of dumping with cans, bottles and fast food rubbish.'
Illegal dumping of rubbish is a rising problem nationwide and the group Irish Business Against Litter says it needs to be higher on the political agenda. Throughout the country many people have not signed up to any authorised waste collection service. Councillors in many areas are raising the problem, saying they are concerned about its increase.
