Roscrea Not Included In Municipal Title

Thursday, 19 January 2017

CONCERNS that Roscrea is unfairly left out of the title of the Municipal District which represents the town have been raised by local Councillor, Michael Smith (FF).

Proposals to expand the title of the Templemore Thurles Municipal District to include Roscrea are to be sent to the Department of Local Government after the issue was raised at the monthly meeting of Tipperary County Council.

The name dates back to the old electoral areas, which took their names from the towns which had Town Councils.

The issue was raised by local FF councillor Michael Smith who feels the town is being unfairly excluded given its size.

It was reported following the County Council meeting that some Tipperary Councillors objected to the motion on the grounds they feared permitting the name change to go ahead would open the floodgates in terms of other Municipal Districts who might seek similar changes.

An official change to the Municipal District's title will require a legislative change and many local people in Roscrea are strongly supporting the call for a name change.
