Two New Classrooms For St Brendanís Community School

Thursday, 9 February 2017

APPROVAL has been granted for two new classrooms at St Brendan's Community School, Birr under the Additional Accommodation list.
School Principal, Ms Ming Loughnane stated 'we are delighted with the news, the new classrooms were badly needed as we have 950 students this year alone and they deserve the best. We appreciate the work of the Department of Education and their investment in our school to date.'
The added classrooms will make life a little easier for the school which funded a further three classrooms themselves, with enhancements to B Block, F Block and G Block.
The school will also be hoping to secure permission for re-glazing in the near future which will in turn help St Brendan's become a greener school and reduce their heating bills.
Works on the new classrooms are believed to proceed as soon as the tendering process has been completed, with the hope they will be ready for use in September 2017.
The news has been welcomed by Offaly/North Tipperary TD and Minister of State for Health Promotion, Marcella Corcoran Kennedy as well as by Cllr John Carroll.
Minister Corcoran Kennedy said 'I am delighted that approval has been granted for two new classrooms at St Brendan's Community School, Birr. The announcement is very welcome news for the staff and students in the school. This enhancement will allow the school to continue to expand and grow in the coming years.
'This investment in post-primary education in Offaly indicates the Government's commitment to education and providing the additional accommodation needed to cater for the growing number of school-going children.
'I am informed that works will proceed once the tendering process has been completed,' she said.
Cllr Carroll said he had been told of the good news by Senator Tim Lombard. The Senator said the school had been approved for additional accommodation which will include two 49 square metre General Classrooms.
The councillor was told that the School Building Unit will shortly issue a detailed letter on the relevant project directly to the school authority informing them of the grant aid sanctioned by the Department.
