ESB Network Technician Maurice O'Toole from Moneygall has clocked almost one million kilometres, driving the same truck for the last 20 years.

This Mercedes Unimog has been in service since 1996: 'I've ate, slept, laughed and cried in this truck. We've tackled every storm the Atlantic could throw at us and she's still going. Maybe this will be our last year together, maybe she'll go on a bit longer, who knows,' says Maurice.

First registered in November 1996, the match began in 1997 when Maurice's name was picked out of a hat to drive the multi-purpose all-wheel drive truck. 'This means I've been the only person driving her for the last 20 years. We've been all over the country everywhere from Belfast to Kerry. I drove 40,000 kilometres last year. Multiply that by 20 and I have done almost a million kilometres with her.'

Maurice O'Toole's three kids have grown up seeing the Unimog parked outside his family home day and night since their partnership began. 'When we do part company it will be strange not having her at home, ready at a moment's notice to head off into the bad weather.'

Reliability has always been the key to this successful relationship: 'When we're going out to a job no matter where you are going, the mission is to get to the pole as quickly as possible with your tools. The last thing you want is the pole to be in the middle of nowhere and you're going back and forth with your tools to your truck. From my experience there is no terrain we haven't been able to cross. This lorry will go anywhere. It has to be the single most reliable vehicle in all of ESB.'

Before either of the two pack in their tools Maurice just wants to recognise all of the hard work that has gone into keeping his Unimog on the road. 'I want to say thank you to all staff, past and present, in the ESB Networks garage in Portlaoise for keeping this lorry in such fantastic condition.'

Here's hoping these two keep on truckin' for many a year to come.
