Rare calving event on Rathcabbin farm thumbnailTom Lambe Rathcabbin and his 18 month old son Paddy with the triplet calves which were born on the family farm last week.

A VERY rare event occurred on a Rathcabbin farm last week when a cow gave birth to three calves.

Farmer Tom Lambe had his suckler cow scanned some months ago and knew that she was bearing three calves, "therefore we gave her special treatment in the lead up to the big event."

The charolais is seven years of age and it delivered the healthy calves on Saturday. The two females and one male newborns were a bit weak but nonetheless healthy.

Tom said sheep often give birth to two or three lambs but cattle normally only deliver one calf at a time.

Tom said this was the first time that an unusual event like this had occurred on his farm. His Dad, Willie, said he couldn't remember anything like this happening in the wider Rathcabbin region before.
