Cloghan playground set to go ahead at St Rynagh’s GAA pitch

Thursday, 31 August 2017

CLOGHAN is to get a children's playground after the green light was given
to the project by Offaly County Council this week.
The planning permission was granted on August 25 and will see the
community project now move to construction stage at the site of St
Rynagh's GAA pitch, Birr Road, Cloghan. The planning authority also
granted permission to allow the demolition of the existing old club
house at the site.
Efforts to build a community playground in Cloghan began around two
years ago and the 'Playground For Cloghan' committee has been busy
getting it up off the ground with the total cost of the project expected
to be in the region of between €80,000 and €90,000. Chairperson of
Cloghan Playground Committee, Cllr John Leahy was delighted with the
news that the planning permission had been granted for the project,
which will include up to eight pieces of equipment when completed. "We
can now start the process of applying for funding to Offaly Local
Development Company and we are still on target subject to funding to
commence ground works in the coming months," he said.
Speaking to Tribune, Cllr Leahy said getting involved in a project means
that a "young vibrant committee working on this at the moment" has been
given a boost and he has no doubt when this project is finished up in
the next year or so they will move onto other projects in the area.
“And, this is what is needed in the area. In the various groups, I have
been involved in, it always starts with one big project and people get
the hunger for community work," he enthused and added that this is
“going to be one of many projects we are going to see in Cloghan in the
coming years".
