Mass marks Dom Richard's departure from Mt St Joseph thumbnailDom Richard Purcell, who has been Abbot at Mt St Joseph, Roscrea since 2009, was recently elected Abbot of Mt Melleray Abbey, Co Waterford and he celebrated his last Sunday Mass at the monastery before he moves on

ON Sunday last the choirs of the Brendan and Cronan Clusters together with the Roscrea Community Choir sang at the 10.30am Mass in Mt St Joseph Abbey.

Dom Richard Purcell, who was Abbot at Mt St Joseph since 2009, was recently elected Abbot of Mt Melleray Abbey, Co Waterford and this was his last Sunday Mass at the monastery before he moves to Mt Melleray.

Dom Richard was the principal celebrant of the mass and he was joined by Archbishop Kieran O'Reilly of Cashel & Emly and Bishop Willie Walsh, Bishop Emeritus of Killaloe, as well as the members of the monastic community and some local clergy.

The choirs were conducted by Lucy McCarthy, Roscrea, while Enda O'Connor, Birr, accompanied on the organ. Almost 100 singers filled the monastery church with glorious music throughout the Mass.

Dom Richard has been involved with the choirs for almost 20 years and under his direction they have sung at several significant occasions both within and outside the diocese, highlights, being the Eurovision Television Mass in 2007 and the Eucharistic Congress in 2012.
