DESCRIBED as an "exceptional person, mature and caring", a Kinnitty teenager was named as the Leinster's CarePlus Pharmacy Young Carer of the Year for 2017.
Alannah Donnelly (15) helps care for her 12 year old brother, Conor, who has intellectual disabilities and behavioural issues. A transition student at St Brendan's Community School, Birr, the teenager was nominated for the award by her mum, Clare where she described how her daughter helps her keep Conor calm and amused and felt that her caring role had given "Alannah huge strength, resilience and empathy".
Speaking to the Midland Tribune last week, Alannah was delighted to have been recognised as a young carer. "It meant a lot," she enthused. Alannah said she helps to care for her 12 year old brother after school and during the school holidays. Complimenting Family Carers Ireland for their work, Alannah said it's definitely "worth checking out their website" to see what supports and resources they provide.
Chatting about being a teenager and a young carer, Alannah admitted it does get lonely sometimes. "You do feel sometimes why me and why does it have to be me. But, you do whatever you need to do and everyone has their own issues to deal with," she quickly pointed out.
According to the 16 year old, she's delighted to be able to do this for her brother and it definitely made her "more mature" as she has to be mindful of her responsibilities to her brother. "I can't just walk out the door and say I am going to my friend's house and sometimes, I don't go to things because of the hassle of it (organising it) but I don't feel like I am missing out on too much." Alannah also praised the support the family get from Enable Ireland, St Anne's in Roscrea and the many other people, who help her and her family with Conor.
Meanwhile, 30 family carers from across Ireland were honoured recently at the CarePlus Pharmacy Carers of the Year Awards 2017, hosted by Family Carers Ireland with awards presented by patrons, Marty Whelan and Mary Kennedy. Catherine Cox, Family Carers Ireland, explained they host the Carers of the Year awards to recognise the huge contribution of their family carers and young carers. "It was fantastic to see 30 carers from counties across Ireland represented to celebrate with their families including Offaly. We really appreciate the support of our new sponsor, CarePlus Pharmacy."
Speaking about their involvement in the awards, Niamh Lynch, Commercial Director at CarePlus Pharmacy said: "Our pharmacists and their teams meet carers in their communities every day. We are aware of the enormous sacrifices that carers make, and CarePlus is committed to doing its part to help them as much as they can. The relationship between pharmacist and carer is vital, which is why we are a proud sponsor of these awards."
