Illuminate Herstory light festival at Birr Castle on Saturday thumbnailThe Courtyard at Birr Castle will be illuminated with a projection of Tina Claffey's Macro photography manipulated with zoetrope animation by Caroline Conway on January 6 next.

TINA Claffey and Caroline Conway present Mary Ward's Amazing World of Wonder in Birr Castle Courtyard on Saturday next January 6, Nollag na mBan, from 6-8pm.

Illuminate Herstory is a new annual global light festival celebrating women and equality. Traditionally in Ireland we celebrate Nollaig na mBan (Women's Little Christmas) as the Christmas lights go out over the first weekend in January. Tina and Caroline invite you to join them on January 6, 2018 and together they will illuminate the world with women.

They will be lighting up Birr Castle Courtyard with a stunning video projection celebrating Mary Ward

The pioneering scientist and Entomologist Mary Ward was examining the minutiae of life through the microscope in the mid nineteenth century, a time of huge scientific advances, including, the Leviathan Telescope, built by her cousins at Birr Castle, and the invention of the first animation device in Belgium.

They have combined and expanded these Victorian visual discoveries and drawn on the tradition of "Science as Performance" to transform Birr Castle Courtyard with a projection of Tina Claffey's Macro photography manipulated with zoetrope animation by Caroline Conway, weaving together old and new technologies to celebrate her book, "A World of Wonders Revealed by the Microscope", published in 1885.

They are thrilled to have the voice of her great granddaughter, Lalla Ward as narrator, who is a well respected BBC actress, best known for playing Romana in Doctor Who.

This will be a really special way to round off the Christmas season. The piece is half an hour long and will play from 6pm on a loop, so you can see it up to four times while you warm up with hot chocolate and mulled wine from the Tea Room.

The main Mary Ward story is preceded by a special compilation of Tina's stunning Winter photographs .

The project is sponsored by Offaly County Council and Creative Ireland.
