Outstanding achievements acknowledged at Portumna CS thumbnailGeorge Harding receives the Male Student of the Year Award from Mike Feerick (CEO of Alison.com) at a special awards ceremony in Portumna Community School recently.

The outstanding success of nine students from Portumna Community School's Leaving Cert class of 2017 was celebrated at a special function held in the school recently.

While all students received over 500 points in their exam a number of exceptional personal achievements were also acknowledged with one, Keith Scully, reaching the maximum score possible, amassing 625 points.

Special guest on the night was a past pupil of the school, Mike Feerick, founder and CEO of Alsion, a world leader in the provision of free online education. In an inspirational speech to parents, teachers and students Mr Feerick spoke of the importance on following your passion, believing in your unique qualities as a person and how with determination, belief and drive anyone can achieve their goals.

Another past pupil of the school Adrian Cummins also delivered a most inspiring address. Originally from Tiernascragh, currently CEO of the Restaurants Association of Ireland, Adrian spoke of how our country is on course to achieve full employment this year and it is a time of huge opportunity. The event took place as part of a careers evening in the school where a large number of career and industry professionals were on hand to pass on their experience and expertise to the school's senior students.

Award For Outstanding Achievement - Keith Scully

Keith Scully of Tynagh was one of nine recipients of an "Outstanding Achievement" award. As well as achieving 625 points in his Leaving Certificate, the maximum possible, Keith was also awarded a Naughton Scholarship which acknowledges and rewards exceptional results in Maths, Science and Engineering and who intend to go on to study these subjects at College. Keith was also awarded a scholarship from NUIG where he is currently studying.

Portumna Community School Female Student of the Year - Mairead Burke

Mairead Burke was awarded the Female Student of the Year. As well as receiving an award for her outstanding Leaving Cert results Mairead was also acknowledged for her huge contribution to many aspects of school life including, sporting, cultural and academic.

Male Student of the Year - George Harding

George Harding received the Male Student of the Year award from guest of honour Mike Feerick.  George achieved outstanding results in his Leaving Cert in 2017 and is now pursuing Actuarial Studies in UCD from where he was awarded an Entrance Scholarship. During his time in Portumna Community School he was also chairperson of the Students Council, a role in which he also excelled and was responsible for delivering a number of very successful projects.
