Gardai investigate drugs found in Tipperary fire service HQ

Thursday, 25 January 2018

GARDAI in Tipperary have launched a major investigation after more than €70,000 worth of drugs, believed to be cocaine, were found concealed at the headquarters of the Tipperary Fire Service in Nenagh.

Gardai in Nenagh arrested one man aged in his 30s last Thursday (January 18) in connection with the incident, where one kilo of white powder was discovered. He was later released from Nenagh Garda Station without charge and a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Tipperary County Council issued a statement on the matter on Monday and although they did not comment on the premises where Gardai conducted searches and found the drugs, they did say the local authority are co-operating fully with the Gardai in their investigation.

"Tipperary County Council wishes to confirm that on Wednesday January 17, 2018, an unknown substance was discovered as a result of a routine health and safety inspection in the Nenagh Fire Station and the Gardai were immediately notified," The Council's statement said.

"This case is now an ongoing criminal investigation and a file is being prepared for the DPP.

"The Council is co-operating fully with Gardai on the matter and it does not want to prejudice or jeopardise that enquiry in any way and therefore is not in a position to comment further pending the conclusion of this investigation," the statement said.

Gardai said on Monday they believe the drugs are cocaine, "pending analysis" and that the investigation is ongoing. It is understood the Gardai are following a number of lines of inquiry to establish exactly who owns the drugs and who brought them to the Fire Service headquarters.

The Fire Service Headquarters is located on the old Limerick Road at Knockanpierce in Nenagh, adjacent to the County Council Offices. The headquarters administer all items relating to the operational fire service, fire safety, building control, emergency planning and petroleum licensing.
