New public access defibrillator available in Birr

Thursday, 8 March 2018

THE residents of Cornmarket Street, Church Street and surrounding areas in Birr launched a new public access defibrillator at Birr Social Club on Tuesday of last week. This vital piece of life saving equipment is now there to be used in a cardiac emergency.
Many of the Social Club members, along with the residents of the area, were trained in CPR and AED in the previous weeks.
Fundraising started last year for this after two of the residents lost their lives to two separate cardiac incidents. The events included: Darts tournament run by Birr Social Club, Open house tea/coffee Day at Rev. Janet White Spunner's house in Church Street, raffle at bingo in the Marian Hall, Birr, and Fun dog training event at Feeney Kennels Borrisokane.
Neighbours and friends gave donations, along with two very generous donations from Birr Lions Club and that Camcor Riders.
The support for all the fundraising was amazing and for that they are truly grateful. Not only could this lifesaving piece of equipment be provided for the area but also donations were able to be made to the Birr Community Responder group and also to Birr/Roscrea Order of Malta unit. Both organisations provide vital care in the community all year round.
To everyone who supported and donated to this worthy cause, or helped in any way a massive thank you. Without the support none of this would have been possible.
The defibrillator is mounted in a heated cabinet donated by Birr Lions Club on the exterior wall of the Social Club. This will provide easy access in an emergency. It is a central location in the town.
Continuous training is provided by Birr Community Responder Group, and also Birr Order of Malta and is open to the public.
CPR and lifesaving skills should be learnt by everyone.
Thanks again to everyone for the support.
