IT was a bleak weekend for sports fans last weekend as the unseasonal heavy snow resulted in the cancellation of all local sporting fixtures.
With snow on the ground and only beginning to thaw out on Sunday, all outdoor sports fixtures were cancelled and the treacherous road conditions resulted in the postponement of all indoor ones as well.
The full schedule of GAA, rugby, soccer, golf and athletics fixtures were wiped out, along with a host of events for minority sports.
Among the cancellations were the eagerly awaited Tipperary-Cork clash in Division 1A of the Allianz Hurling League, along with Offaly's big National Football and Hurling League games on Sunday. With a quarter-final berth already assured, Offaly's National Hurling League Division 1B game against Antrim goes ahead in Birr this Sunday at 2.30pm. The Tipperary-Cork game is also refixed for Sunday next at Semple Stadium in Thurles with a 2.30pm throw in. That is the second part of a double header as it is preceded by Tipperary's Division 2 Football League clash with Louth.
Offaly's crunch National Football League Division 3 relegation show down in Wexford is refixed for this Saturday at 3pm.
While this was to be a spare weekend for the National Football League, the postponements have a big knock on effect for hurling as it will push out the conclusion of them by a week.
Despite the weather, it had been hoped to play a North Leinster Colleges senior football final between Ferbane's Gallen Community School and Cnoc Mhuire, Granard at St Loman's in Mullingar on Monday but this was postponed that morning. It has been refixed for this Thursday at 2pm.
Normal activity will resume this weekend. There is a full programme of GAA, soccer, rugby and golf activity while the Offaly athletics 5k road race series will commence on Sunday in Castlejordan at 12 noon, with registration taking place from 10.30am in the local Community Centre.
