NORTH TIPPERARY Gardaí are investigating the attempted abduction of a child by a man in a shopping centre last week, who was spotted by the child's mother leading the child by the hand out the shop's exit.
The incident, which was reported to Gardaí last Saturday in Thurles, caused panic among concerned local parents across the county when news of the attempted abduction broke on social media.
Gardaí have advised parents across the region to be extra vigilant in ensuring their child is safe, while they investigate the incident where a man was spotted by the child's mother leading her toddler out the door of the shopping centre in the town centre.
It is understood the child's mother reported to Gardaí after the incident that she observed a man acting suspiciously in the store and that while paying for her goods, noticed her child toddler had strayed from her side.
Immediately after, she saw a stranger leading her child by the hand onto the street and she intervened, causing the man to panic and flee the scene on foot. Subsequently the Gardaí rushed to the store and started their investigation and identified the man.
Gardaí have confirmed the man is known to them and advised people to be extra vigilant when out and about with their children over the course of the weekend and to be on the alert for people acting suspiciously.
Parents are also advised to educate their children on the dangers of strange people approaching and offer advice not to speak to or engage with people they have never met.
