THE local litter warden undertook an investigation into illegal dumping outside Birr after a bag of rubbish, torn open and scattered, was discovered in Rock Lane.
The bag, believed to contain mostly recyclable domestic material, was discovered along Rock Lane over the weekend and the matter was reported subsequently to the Environment section of Offaly County Council.
The local authority confirmed they received a complaint about the incident at Rock Lane and the litter warden attended the scene on Monday afternoon last where there was one bag of rubbish, containing domestic waste, which had been torn open and scattered. Following an investigation into the matter, the Council source told the Tribune the litter warden cleaned up the rubbish and removed it from the area.
Highlighting the issue with the Tribune, Cllr Sean Maher, said he reported the issue to the local authority. Following this incident, Cllr Maher also asked the Tribune to highlight the need for people "not to touch these bags of rubbish" if they discover any illegally dumped materials. "They need to report the bags/incidents to the local authorities so an investigation can take place," he continued.
Noting the contents of the bag, the Birr Municipal District councillor said it was "mostly made up of recyclable material" and there was a need to have a "proper discussion on how we use this material and dispose of it safely".
