3,656 young people from all corners of Ireland travelled to the University of Limerick last weekend to take part in the first weekend of the Aldi Community Games National Finals where competitors from Tipperary enjoyed considerable success winning a total of three Gold, seven Silver, six Bronze and three Pewter medals in various events
One of the highlights of the weekend was young Killian Whelan, Powerstown, giving an amazing performance to win a gold medal in U-12 breaststroke swimming on a day described by his family žas one they would never forgetÓ. Swimming is the most competitive event on the programme and becoming a national champion is something special. Former community games competitor and superstar Paul OŪConnell paid a visit to the games on Saturday to present medals in his favourite sport as a child žswimmingÓ. It was also a memorable weekend for the Carew sisters from Lattin Cullen who have a super record in Model Making/Art and they added to their collection when Aine won Gold in the U-14 event and Leah won silver U-16. Well done girls.
Cashel Rosegreen U-13 Indoor Soccer team had an 8-2 victory over Longford in their semi final but Donegal deprived them of the National title. However runners up in an All Ireland final is a great achievement.
The Murray family from Ballingarry once again displayed their talent as artists with all three siblings Hannah, Colin & Kieran winning bronze medals. Their older sister Emma was part of the girls marathon team along with Lucy Murphy, Cashel and Rosie OŪFlaherty, Powerstown.
Eight year old Niall Fitzgerald from Boherlahan was brilliant winning a bronze in U-12 solo music Ů fouryears under the age limit. Well done Niall.
Lauren Duggan from Nenagh was fantastic in the pool winning a silver medal under 8.
