Kinnitty Post Office- Use it or lose it, says postmistress thumbnail

OVER the past twelve months, deliberations have been ongoing between postmasters and An Post regarding the future of the post office network across the country with several post offices already closed in recent years in Offaly.
Under the latest proposals from An Post, many postmasters and mistresses are now facing difficult decisions regarding the feasibility to provide this important rural service into the future.
Kinnitty post office is one such post office, which is under serious threat of closure as local postmistress Brenda Byrne, considers her options.
"My post office has been a way of life for 36 years and it's heartbreaking to now be facing closure. The only way it can survive is through the support of the local community availing of the many services we provide," she said. Some of the broad range of services the post office provide include: mail, passport & licence applications, payment of bills and currency conversion.
Local Cllr John Clendennen acknowledges the challenges facing rural post offices and believes it's now at a crucial point. "We've reached a juncture where it's use it or lose it in relation to the local post office service in Kinnitty village and I would encourage everyone in the local area to support this vitally important service to ensure it's sustainable long into the future and avoid the potential devastation of closure and a further void in the village".
Mrs Byrne is now undertaking a process of engagement with the local community to determine if there's a demand for the service in the village. "Kinnitty is a popular village with a lot of potential with investment in recent times, but it would be a real shame to see the post office close creating a further void in the village", concluded the Kinnitty postmaster.
