Goals vital as Kilruane claim crown

Thursday, 6 September 2018

KILRUANE MACDONAGHS 4-5 NEWPORT 1-7 With two teams that were evenly matched in most quarters, it was clear that this contest would be decided by green flags rather than white ones. And so it was, Kilruane finding the net at crucial moments to earn a well-deserved North title and set up a county semi-final against Cahir next Saturday in Boherlahan.
Early points from centre-forward Jack Mulcahy and the pacey Jack Gleeson gave Kilruane the momentum, but their lead was cut in half by Newport's Lee Ryan, who hit the first of his six frees in the fifth minute.
Carroll, and his midfield partner Tadgh O'Brien, were the vital cogs in the Kilruane machine, but it was Mulcahy and the player in front of him, Oisín Williams, who managed a string of important scores in the run-up to half-time. A Williams goal, one minute into stoppage time, was possibly the most dispiriting thing that could have happened Newport at that point, but it happened and left them trailing by 2-5 to 0-4 at the interval.
To their credit, the losing side came out all guns blazing in the second period, kicking off with frees from Ryan. The danger posed by a high ball into the square is most prominent at juvenile level, and that was illustrated in the last 15 minutes. With 12 minutes of normal time remaining, Newport were struck with good fortune when O'Riordan's long-range free evaded everyone in the Kilruane goalmouth, drifting into the net and reducing the margin to just two points.
About 90 seconds later, the opposite occurred - this time it was Kilruane's number 8, Eoin Carroll, who lofted a high ball towards the danger zone from 65 metres and moments later found himself celebrating his side's third goal.
A superb individual goal by Oisín Williams, his second of the day, cemented the victory, capping off a fine collective display by Kilruane, who seem to always find an answer when they need it most.
