Kilcormac/Killoughey the favourites but Coolderry well fit to land title

Thursday, 4 October 2018

COUNTY final season is back and while they haven't met each other much in knockout Senior Hurling Championship fare in recent times, the clash of Kilcormac/Killoughey and Coolderry will see Offaly's last two Leinster club champions go head to head.
Sunday in O'Connor Park will see two teams come to the plate that are fully convinced they can win the Sean Robbins Cup.
Confidence won't be an issue while both have shown in recent times that they know how to get the job done in a final.
Since 2010, Coolderry have won three senior hurling titles and Kilcormac/Killoughey have won four, meaning they have been the shining lights this decade.
The lack of meetings at this stage of the championship makes for a fresh and interesting pairing.
Coolderry have been the form team in the championship having come through the seven game group stage unbeaten.
In such a tight championship, this is impressive but it was a sign of the closeness of the championship that included in that unbeaten run were three draws, including one with K/K in the opening round back in April.
That came won't have any bearing on Sunday's final as both have evolved, got fitter, sharper and are now in final mode.
Kevin Connolly captains Coolderry and he has been one of the players of the championship to date. Playing in the full forward line, the burden of being Captain hasn't weighed on him at all as he has been in free scoring form from open play all year.
Brian Carroll has also been prominent and when it comes to frees, Carroll won't miss too many.
With Martin Corcoran acting as a target man at number 14, those three will pose plenty of problems for the K/K rearguard.
