BEECHLAWN Golf Club is to re-open in Rahan this year. Situated in the ground of the old Jesuit College in Rahan, the course closed in 2008 but has now been taken over by a Portarlington native, Colin Finlay and a Dublin man, Conor Marken.
Obviously, the course became over grown during its prolonged spell of non use but the new proprietors are carrying out extensive work on it and hope to open it in 2011.
A nine hole course, comprising of 4 par fours, 4 par threes and one par 5, a driving range and new club house are also being constructed.
The club house will include gents and ladies locker rooms, catering facilities and possibly a bar.
The club will provide great value for money and Colin Finlay, a former assistant professional for five years with the professional, Donagh McArdle at Tullamore Golf Club, reckons that it will be among the cheapest in Ireland.
Membership for the year costs just €200 and green fees will be just €10 per round, making it remarkable value.
The course is being redesigned completely - It is being lengthened in some areas, two new lakes and three new tee boxes are being put in and the greens are being resodded.
The new proprietors have also struck a deal with Cleveland Golf and stock their clubs as well as providing a full custom fitting service - This will be available shortly. They will also stock Cobra and Nike clubs and balls.
Beechlawn Golf Club incorporates a driving range which is now open - It costs just €2 for 25 Srixon balls - and a short game practice area.
Details on membership and opening date can be obtained from Colin Finlay on 087 2469999.
