Thursday, 17 February 2011

Tullamore College 5-9 Lanesboro 2-10.

TULLAMORE College captured this years North Leinster junior football title defeating a spirited Laneboro side after extra time in St Faithleach Ballyleague.
Tullamore College came out flying winning all the 50/50 battles with Ronan Crombie at wing forward dominating his position which led to Shane Tierney scoring the first point of the game. Laneboro responded in style and started to dominate the midfield battle for most of first half creating numerous scoring chances and this led to two Lanesboro goals. Tullamore College did not let this ffect them and responded with two points of their own to reduce the deficit. The half time score was Tullamore College 0-3 to Lanesboro's 2-3.
Aiden Campbell replaced Patrick Sheerin at wing forward at half time and this seemed to have an immediate effect as he started to win a lot of ball and create scoring chances which led to a goal scored by corner forward Shane Tierney. Both teams traded scores to leave the score at Tullamore College 1-4 to Lanesboro 2-4.
At this stage Tullamore College looked the hungrier and fitter team and this started to tell as Dean McDonagh broke through the Laneboro defence to level the match with a well taken goal. Tullamore College had momentum at this stage and looked the more likely winners and took a two point lead as the game was approaching an end but to Laneboro's credit the scored two points deep into extra time to force this match into extra time.
Tullamore College started extra time full of life and the introduction of Brian Ryan and Barry Mooney added fresh legs as the Laneboro's players were running on empty and could not cope with the pace and quick movement of the Tullamore College forwards and in particular the roaming Stephen Conneely who was causing lots of problem for the Laneboro defence which led to the in form Dean McDonagh producing two moments of magic scoring two goals in extra time which broke the hearts of the Laneboro team and supporters.
At half time of extra time Tullamore College had an eight point lead that they never looked like loosing. The second half was a dull affair with Tullamore College and Laneboro sharing just a point each. Laneboro looked like they had a glimmer of hope only for two excellent saves from Kevin Kinahan and an outstanding display from Karl Dunne who ran his socks off clearing numerous balls and playing a captain role driving out of defence all day.
At full time Tullamore College ran out deserving winners on a scoreline of 5-9 to Laneboro's 2-10.
