Birr Fall Just Short Of Toppling League Leaders

Thursday, 15 December 2011

Birr 10. Boyne 12.

Boyne U15's, who are unbeaten in the Leinster campaign felt very humbled by the opponents that faced them in Birr last weekend.
Having trounced all of the sides thus far, it was only a matter of protocol to take all four points back to Meath but a battered and bruised Birr side had different ideas. No longer fearing the size and quality of the sides facing them, Birr dominated the first half completely.
Such was the intensity of the exchanges, the Birr coach attended to two bloodied noses in the within five minutes of each other. Birr played with relentless enthusiasm all over the pitch and Boyne simply couldn't live with the aggression and guts displayed.
There scores were extremely well taken and it would be unjust to name the try scorers as one came from a beautiful series of passes through the backs and the second from the training ground as Birr's pack drove it home from 10 yards.
Half time read Birr 10-0 but in the second half the Birr pack tired after a great first half and Boyne themselves then ran in two easy tries. It was set for a showdown finish.
With four minutes to go Birr camped on the Boyne try line. The Birr supporters were willing them over for a score but it was not to be. Boyne had the points but Birr had the respect.
Perhaps the Boyne coach summed it up saying "it was the toughest pack we played all year and we only just deserved that win. We have not been tested this harshly this season".
From one to 18, everybody did their best but Jack Clancy, Jack Regan, Conor Hogan, Conor Molloy and Coolderry ace Chris Maloney were all at the top of their game. Also a mention for Coolderry's Billy Burke who made his debut in the front row - a tough area fora guy who did no wrong.
Next Saturday is the last game of the season and a last chance to give these young warriors a good cheer. We hope to give them some food and drinks before the hop on a bus to go and see Leinster playing that evening in Dublin later that evening.
Parents will be most welcome into the clubhouse afterwards. We will have the kettle on so please come in and join us.
