A DURROW swimmer performed heroics when he competed in the short course National Senior Swimming Championships in Lisburn last weekend.
16 year old, Alex Condron was magnificent against much older swimmers as he took second in the 200 metres breast stroke, missing out on a national title by just three tenths of a second to Philip Duffy in 2.20.08.
On Saturday, he took bronze in the 100 metres breast stroke, finishing five seconds behind international and Olympian, Barry Murphy in a time of 1.06.60.
It was a tremendous weekend for the Durrow youth who also set a personal best of 1.58 in the 200m free style and 4.15 in the 400m free style.
Races took place over a 25 metre pool and Alex's time of 2.20m in the 200m breast stroke secured qualification for the British Age Group Championships in July in Sheffield.
A member of Athlone Swimming Club, he has also been nominated for a Westmeath sports star award in January.
It is believed he is the first Offaly man to win a national senior swimming medal. In other events Alex made the B final in the 200 free style in a time of 1.58.00 and in the 400 free style he did a time of 4.15 and made it to the A final.
Alex's twin brother, Ryan was affected by illness in Lisburn but also did very well, setting personal bests of 2.05 in the 200m free style and 17.40 in the 1,500m freestyle. He also did a personal best of 57 seconds in the 100m free style.
