A RHODE man was feted at the annual Offaly Association in New York dinner dance.
Danny Leavy, resident in Yonkers since the 1990s, was the guest of honour at a very enjoyable function that was held in the plush surrounds of the Lake Isle Country Club in Eastchester.
Leavy, a former footballer of considerable talent with Rhode and Offaly, immersed himself in Offaly affairs after emigrating, playing with the Offaly football team in New York for years.
He was recognised for his contribution to the Offaly teams and the Offaly Association in New York - One of the biggest and most progressive of the county associations in the big Apple.
Danny's brothers, Pat, chairman of the Offaly Association in New York, and Brendan were among the large attendance at the dance, along with other family members and friends from home.
The presentation to the guest of the honour was the highlight of the night and Danny Leavy was given a well deserved standing ovation as he received his award.
There were also loud cheers for the Offaly man of the year, Seamus Clarke who was honoured for his generous financial support of Offaly teams in New York - The proprietor of J.P. Clarke's Bar on McLean Avenue in Yonkers, they are the main sponsors of the Offaly GAA Club in New York.
Once again, there was a real GAA flavour to proceedings and the Offaly team that won the New York Senior Hurling Championship for the fifth year in a row were presented with their medals by New York GAA chairman, Larry McCarthy and former Offaly hurler, Michael Duignan.
The club man of the year was Brian McNaughton while the player of the year was Shane Sweeney.
Special presentations were made to two former Offaly footballers who traveled over from home for the dinner dance - Willie Bryan, captain of the Offaly side that won the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship for the first time in 1971 and winner of a second All-Ireland medal in 1972, and Willie Nolan, winner of Leinster Senior Football Championship medals in 1960 and 1961.
