David Kenny has been handed the Captaincy of the Offaly hurlers for the year ahead. The Belmont man has proven a popular choice around the County and indeed in the dressing room as he leads Offaly into a pivotal year.
Manager Ollie Baker is in his term as Offaly manager and the Clare native had no hesitations in giving the defensive lynchpin the nod.
"He is very solid inside in the full back line. He has huge experience and has been around for a number of years. He gives a great confidence to the lads around him. It was a no brainer really that he was going to be there or thereabouts. He is a leader in the dressing room and everyone looks to him. He is a top quality guy", explained Baker.
Kenny is coming off the back of a nightmare 2011 in which he suffered serious knee trouble, a concussion in the original Walsh Shield final and also had to endure commuting to and from London for parts of the League.
Having played through the pain barrier for all of 2011, Kenny took a few months out in the late Autumn and Winter to clear up his injuries and was a pillar of strength in Offaly's Walsh Shield win over DIT.
David Kenny made his Offaly debut in the Walsh Cup against Westmeath in 2007 while going on to make his Championship debut against Laois the same year.
He is also currently playing for NUIG in the Fitzgibbon Cup as he competes his studies to become a teacher. In the full of his health there are few men better at manning the full back berth.
Highly respected by his team mates and supporters alike, Kenny, to the best of his reporters knowledge, is the first Belmont man to ever Captain Offaly at senior level. It is a terrific achievement for the man himself and of course his club.
Ballyskenagh's Brendan Murphy will take on the vice Captains role.
