Offaly Aim For Winning Start As Laois Come To Town

Thursday, 23 February 2012

OLLIE Baker's first engagement in the National Hurling League with Offaly will be to steer them through a somewhat sticky assignment against Laois on Sunday in O'Connor Park.
The Clare native takes Offaly into the game as heavy favourites but will be under no illusions about the dangers that Laois can bring to the table. Cork legend Teddy McCarthy has the reigns in Laois and they did defeat Dublin in the Walsh Cup even though Dublin did have an experimental team out.
Offaly come into the game on the back of victories over Wexford and DIT in the Walsh Shield and will quietly fancy their chances of making waves in Division 1B of this years league where they will come across challenges from Antrim, Wexford, Limerick and Clare as well as the O'Moore County on Sunday.
Having already lost to Westmeath in the Walsh Cup, the faithful chargers will be eager not to slip up on home turf as the real start to the season kicks off. David Kenny captains the side for the year while Joe Bergin and Shane Dooley come into the game on the back of performing well for Leinster in their victory over Munster at the weekend.
Offaly have three home games in comparison to their two away games and the games in O'Connor Park will prove pivotal in their bid to top the division.
