North Tipperary Under-21 Hurling Championship

Thursday, 17 November 2016

NEWPORT are back in the North Tipperary Under-21 Hurling championship after they successfully appealed the decision by the North Board to throw them out of the North championship following their refusal to play Kiladangan in the second round of the championship on Monday 31st October.
Newport were grouped with Kilruane MacDonaghs and Kiladangan. Their games were deferred own to clubs involvement at other grades. If you recall Kiladangan were involved the county senior championship where they reached the county final losing to Thurles Sarsfields in the decider on October 16th.
On Sunday 23rd October, Newport successfully completed their run in the County Intermediate championship beating Thurles Sarsfields in the decider.
All eyes turned towards the Walsh's Of Nenagh North Tipperary Under-21 championship. Kilruane played Newport on Saturday the 29th October. Kilruane won. Newport had a number of injuries arising from that game and subsequently decided not to play their second game against Kiladangan which was fixed for Monday 31st. In addition Newport may have had an eye on their forthcoming Munster Intermediate game with Lismore of Waterford which would mean three games in eight days.
As a result the North Board awarded the game to Kiladangan. With pressure on to meet county semi final dates luck fell on the North Board when the outstanding group game Kiladangan versus Kilruane MacDonaghs fixed for November 6th did not take place. Kiladangan were awarded the game. Instead it was decided to play quarter finals the same day when Kilruane beat Clonakenny/Moneygall and Borris-Ileigh overcame Kiladangan.
In the meantime Newport appealed the decision to have them thrown out of the North championship and were successful in their appeal.
At a subsequent North Tipp CCC meeting the four semi finalists plus Newport met to decide the next step and following a long discussion it was decided that one of the four would be drawn against Newport in a re-scheduled quarter final. Kilruane MacDonaghs was the team drawn from the hat and that game is due to take place this coming weekend.
As a result the Kiladangan club are aggrieved with their lot. They are not happy to be knocked out of a championship after just one game while Newport (who lost a game) are back in the race.
Interesting times!
N.B. The semi final draw as it stands is Kilruane MacDonaghs or Newport v Roscrea and Toomevara v Borris-Ileigh.
