Coláiste Phobal Roscrea ...1-7 Coláiste Iosaef, Kilmallock ...2-2
COLAISTE Phobal Roscrea were lucky to hold out to claim the North Munster title after a late comeback by Kilmallock in the final, played in ideal weather conditions on Saturday last in Shinrone GAA pitch.
The Roscrea side won the 'B' final last year and with ten from that team now lining out on the starting fifteen, the young girls from Colaiste Phobal carried the favourites tag as opposed to Coláiste Iosaef, who hadn't featured last year.
Roscrea dominated most of the match and were 1-3 to 0-1 to the good at half time. They continued to tag on points in the last half until five minutes to finish when the drama started. Apparently home and dry, Roscrea allowed Kilmallock in for two quick goals from the substitute who had just come on Emma Walsh, which left one point standing between the sides with time running out. However, with two minutes of added time, Sharon Shanahan pointed from a free as the referee called time and a huge sigh of relief from the Roscrea mentors and supporters.
Playing with the aid of a light breeze, Roscrea started brightly and laid down a marker with Fiona Scully dropping over her first point after ninety seconds.
Kilmallock attacked goals with Aisling Lynch going low but Aisling Ryan intercepted and cleared out field where Roscrea worked hard to get the ball to Rachel Earley who rattled the Limerick net in the seventh minute aided by Fiona Scully and Caoimhe Flannery. Kilmallock launched another attack through Caroline Brennan and Shauna Foley with Clodagh O'Doherty dropping a ball to the forwards but the Roscrea defence was excellent with Jane Cleary and Teresa Maher eventually working the ball out of danger. Kilmallock won a free at a time when they needed a score but Clodagh O'Doherty sent narrowly it wide of target and their chance was lost.
Back in the hunt, Roscrea had the ball back in to the forwards and a free from Sharon Shanahan landed in the danger zone and with great work rate from Kate Hogan, Andrea Scully took possession where she went hunting for goal but Kilmallock net minder Sinead Allen denied and in the follow up scramble, Roscrea won a free which Ciara Sammon drove over as the quarter faded.
There was some fine skill on show as Shauna Foley kept the Kilmallock flag flying and try as Roscrea did to get a second goal before the break, it just wasn't to be with heavy defending from the Kilmallock back line. However, Rachel Earley fired over a great point just before the break with Eilish Gleeson, Ally Clifford, Andrea Scully and Fiona Scully involved in the build up and Roscrea led by five points 1-3 to 0-1.
Kilmallock took the game to Roscrea on resumption and were unfortunate not to have goaled in the early exchanges but the Roscrea backs were solid with credit to their keeper Emily Doughan who blocked two successive attempts at goal, the second going out for a '45' which Shauna Foley sent narrowly wide.
Over the following eleven minutes, Roscrea took hold of the play, dropped over a further two points and kept Kilmallock well away from threat of scoring. Sharon Shanahan dropped a free to the forwards, and Kate Hogan split the uprights with the second point landed by full forward Fiona Scully after Shannahan dropped in another free. Ciara Sammon and Shauna Foley swapped points, Kilmallock's second score which came 47 minutes into the game.
With five minutes of normal time remaining, Kilmallock brought on Emma Walsh in the corner forward position and immediately she made an impression, hunting for possession where she pounced for her first goal after taking a pass from Clodagh O'Doherty with just two minutes of normal time left. This late drama almost caught Roscrea off guard and with a poor clearance, Walsh pounced for her second goal, both within the minute and now just one point separated the sides and Roscrea were left pondering how lucky they were to have that point to their credit.
Working hard to hold out, Roscrea swung back into action, worked the ball up field where Sharon Shanahan was unlucky when she missed the target with normal time up. Roscrea were working extremely hard to keep the ball into their forwards as Kilmallock just couldn't get possession and with Shanahan tearing upfield through the Kilmallock half back line, offloading to Eilish Gleeson who crossed to Reanne Conlon who immediately took a heavy fall and with the resulting free, Sharon Shahahan drove superbly between the uprights as the referee called time and Roscrea celebrated their narrow escape with huge relief.
