Tullamore Harriers Capture Mens' Over 50s Silver Medals In National Masters Cross Country Championships thumbnailEanna Gowran, leading the Tullamore Harriers and Offaly to mens' over 50 silver medals at the National Masters Cross Country in Waterford.

THERE was glory for the Tullamore Harriers when they captured the silver medals in the mens' over 50s race at the National Masters Cross Country Championships in Waterford on Sunday last, as well as back boning the Offaly team that also finished second in the county competition.

On a very tough course with plenty of testing hills, Eanna Gowran ran a superb race to lead the team home in 70th overall, completing the 7k distance in 26.47. He was followed home by his Tullamore Harriers colleagues, Christy Donegan (84th in 27.25), Brendan Abbott (104th in 28.12) and Martin Carroll (133rd in 29.15) to take silver medals.

The county six included those four along with Birr AC's Andy Masterson (158th in 301.3) and another Tullamore Harriers member, Sean Reynolds (188th in 32.08).

At the top end of the field, the competition was fierce with some great times being posted and first home for Offaly was Ferbane AC's Mick Fogarty, who was 18th in 25.08, with Tullamore Harriers' Padraig Berry 27th in 25.26 and Ferbane's Paul Buckley not far behind as he finished 30th in 25.32.

Tullamore Harriers' Pauline Curley ran very well in the masters womens' race, finishing 9th overall in 15.56 and winning silver in the over 45s event, as she finished just behind Bandon's Carmel Crowley.

There was no joy for Offaly clubs or county teams in the team events, apart from the mens' over 50. The Tullamore Harriers ladies over 35s team were 9th club while their over 50s team were 6th club, with Offaly 5th and 7th in the county competitions at these grades.

The Ferbane over 35s team were 10th club with the Tullamore Harriers 13th while Offaly finished sixth county in this grade.
