Home Comforts For Offaly As Kerry Victory Sets Up NHL Quarter Final With Tipp

Thursday, 30 March 2017

OFFALY supporters will have a rare double header in Tullamore on Sunday as the hurlers have been drawn at home to face Tipperary in the National Hurling League quarter final. With the hurling throwing in at 4pm, it comes after the footballers do or die match with Laois at 2pm, win and they stay in Division three, lose and they are back down to Division four.
Offaly and Tipp is a repeat of the 2015 quarter final that was also in O'Connor Park and it comes on the back of Offaly getting their first win of the regular league campaign away to Kerry last Sunday.
Offaly came out on top 1-21 to 2-16 on Sunday with Kerry down to 14 men for the entire second half. Offaly had led by five near the end but a late Kerry goal brought them back within a score.
The quarter final with Tipperary is a bonus at this stage. Winless going down to Kerry, a defeat would have sent Offaly to a relegation play off with Laois but Kevin Ryan's charges got the win when they needed it most to stay out of relegation trouble and get a crack at the All Ireland champions.
Tipp lost out to Cork on Sunday by a point for their first defeat in the league. Michael Ryan experimented with his team down on Leeside but is likely to revert back to as full strength as it at his disposal for Sunday.
For Offaly, the pressure of relegation is off. Not many will expect a result but a performance would be encouraging ahead of the championship.
A bumper crowd is expected in Tullamore given the magnitude of both games. Two local derbies with plenty at stake.
