NIALL McNamee has returned to the Offaly senior football panel, giving the squad a huge boost ahead of their June 11 Leinster Senior Football Championship opener against Westmeath in Tullamore.
The Rhode attacker, now one of Offaly's longest serving players, didn't play any part in the National Football League as he battled a stomach injury, while there was speculation that he might not play any part this year at all.
However, he has now put a damper on these rumours and McNamee is almost certain to start in the big championship derby.
Manager Pat Flanagan also expects to welcome back another of his top forwards, Anton Sullivan, who missed the league as he was on army duty in the Lebanon, but is due home this week.
And he has freshened up his panel by bringing Tullamore's Paul McConway, a former captain and defender, back into the fold along with Gracefield's Ruari Allen, who impressed in the local Senior Football Championship.
Flanagan considered bringing in other players but remarked: 'We had a look at all championship matches and the difference in Niall, Paul and Ruari is that they have the physique. They have all the work done over the last number of years to add to the situation immediately. We looked at others but they would not be ready for the Westmeath game.'
As a result of the new players, they will have to cut players from the panel in the coming week but they have utilised other outside players such as Edenderry's Jordan Hayes and Ciaran Farrell and Cappincur's P.J. Daly to bolster games at training sessions where they were down players because of college commitments and other reasons.
