LIAM Brady took another significant step forward when setting a huge new personal best for 5,000 metres at a big meeting in Greystones Athletics Club, Wicklow last weekend.
In a high quality field at the Irish Milers Club event, Brady posted a great time of 14.15.04, well inside his previous best of 14.38.
The Coolderry man was delighted with his success as his season enters a crucial phase.
His targets this year are to break 29.45 for 10k while he is also hoping to medal in the National Track and Field Championships later in the year.
In a ferociously fought contest in Greystones, Brady's time was still only good enough for eight place with the winner, John Travers of Donore Harriers posting 13.52.67, the top two under 14 minutes and the top six under 14.10.
It was still a massive run by Brady, who is an outstanding cross country runner, and he will be hoping to achieve his 10,000m time at a big meeting in London on May 20, the Highgate Harriers Night of the 10,000m PBs on their Parliament Hill Track. His PB for 10,000m is 29.59.61 which he set at this meeting in 2015.
After that, his attention will run to the Irish Track and Field Championships in Santry in July. A member of the Tullamore Harriers, Brady is ambitious about what he can achieve and has a big decision ahead over whether to compete in the 5,000m or 10,000m - the fact that seven runners finished ahead of him in Greystones could push him towards the 10,000m but either way, he is coming into excellent form at the right time of the year.
Brady, a member of a very well known Coolderry hurling family, ran his great 5k on Saturday and on Sunday, he easily won the Tullamore Harriers own 5k road race - he did just what he had to do to win as he completed the course in a time of just over 16 minutes.
