Birr Golf Club Preparing For Three Day Annual Club Classic thumbnailBirr Golf Club will hold their annual Club Classic over the weekend of Friday May 26th, Saturday May 27th and Sunday May 28th.

BIRR Golf Club will hold their annual Club Classic over the weekend of Friday May 26th to Sunday May 28th next. The club are hoping that all members as well as golfers from adjoining clubs will support the event, which has grown in popularity over recent years.

This is the club's main fundraising event of the year and it runs for three days on Friday May 26th, Saturday May 27th and Sunday May 28th. The event is kindly sponsored by Haven Pharmacy Butlers, Birr. Teams of four cost €120 and full catering will be available each day. There will be excellent prizes available and all members and encouraged to support the classic and enter a team. They are also inviting golfers from adjoining clubs to come along and support them and enter a team. To enter contact the club on (057) 9120082 and Joan or Francie will book your spot on the timesheet. In conjunction with the classic the club also has an ongoing raffle for a beautiful hamper.

 Birr Golf Club is an 18 hole course in top class condition and is considered an excellent challenge for any golfer. The club has been making ongoing improvements which have enhanced the course. It is open seven days a week and is available to cater for all groups, societies and fundraising groups.

The club will be celebrating 125 years next year in 2018 and is one of the oldest clubs in Ireland. The club has an excellent reputation for the warmth of its welcome and is renowned as one of the friendliest clubs around. The bar is open seven days a week and all visitors are guaranteed a friendly welcome.

There has a range of membership options available as one size doesn't fit all. These include distance, overseas, juvenile. social, full and family - there is something to suit everyone.  

This year the club introduced a new category of membership, social membership, which is effectively golf for €1 a day. This category of membership is €360 per year plus GUI/ILGU fees and so far in excess of 100 people have availed of this attractive offer.

The club has a vibrant men's and ladies section, who are very active within the club and also take part in GUI and ILGU competitions. The club has teams involved in a lot of inter club competitions at the moment and they have enjoyed some success.

A unique feature of the club is that Michael Horan's golf shop and driving range is adjacent to the club where golfers can get the full range of golfing equipment and also practice their golf.

The club caters for all ages and ranges of golfer. They have members who are still playing in their 90s, indicating that golf is a game that can be played for life. Every Thursday the seniors have their outing while the ladies have their Glen Eagles event every Thursday also.

The club also looks after its juvenile golfers from an early age. They are mentored and introduced to the game by a qualified group of people.

Birr's Gemma Butler was captain of the Irish Girls team which won the Home Internationals for the very first time in Wales last Summer. Members of the winning team visited Birr Golf Club later in the year. Gemma has also taken on a new role as Director of Junior Golf on the Board of the ILGU.

There will be an Induction Day at Birr Golf Club on June 1st for new lady members.

For people who want to come and visit the course, they offer exceptional value. They have an open day every Tuesday when visitors can get the chance to play the course for €10, which is great value. That gives access to the excellent facilities available at the clubhouse

The Presidents' Mixed Scramble takes place each Monday evening. This is a social nine hole event which is proving very popular.

The club has a new caterer in Alan Walkin, who is providing excellent fare in the restaurant. The restaurant is open to the public for Sunday lunch and all are welcome to come along and enjoy the excellent food in a lovely atmosphere.

The club welcomes all golf societies of any size or number, ladies and gents, who are welcome to avail of the facilities at Birr Golf Club. They have favourable society rates.

They are open for Green fees, which are €20, which is great value for four hours of entertainment.

The club has a reciprocal arrangement for full members with New Forest Golf Club in Tyrellspass and the Heritage Golf Club in Killenard, where members can play two free rounds of golf on each of the other courses, which makes the full membership option very affordable and makes great value for many. This offer began on May 1st.

The quality of the course has been recognised by the fact that it has been chosen to host a number of major events. The course is kept in excellent condition by the course staff. Head greenkeeper Darragh Finneran and staff Brendan Hogan and Brendan Hoare ensure the quality of the course is kept up to standard at all times.

The club would be delighted to see visitors coming to play in the Development Classic and take the opportunity to play the Birr course. Members are encouraged to invite a guest to come along and play with them in the Classic from May 26th-28th.
