ON Saturday June 17th Moneygall FC will open their new playing field and community grounds off Elderberry Drive, and after 39 years, soccer will have a permanent home in Moneygall.
The celebrations will commence with the official opening of the grounds by FAI Chief Executive John Delaney at 2.30p.m. and will be followed by the first game on the €170,000 development.
Moneygall FC Legends under the management of John Hassett, who has collated a team spanning various years over the club's history, will face the might of Mick Byrne's Republic of Ireland Masters. The Republic of Ireland Masters are made up of experienced retired professional footballers with many having played underage for the Republic of Ireland, gained experience in the League of Ireland and some very familiar names with senior international caps including Stephen Hunt, Curtis Fleming, Mark Kinsella, Dominic Foley and Stephen McPhail.
The domineering might of the Masters team won't deter Moneygall's performance and commitment in putting on a display to ensure the Kieran Costello Memorial Cup stays in Moneygall. Each Moneygall player is using the opportunity to raise funds to help the club reduce the debt from the development and are going to ensure that the pitch the play on will soon be paid for. Chairman of Moneygall Mark Moroney said 'With eight underage teams, a youth and junior team along with an ambition to field our first underage girls team for next season, this new facility will get plenty of use.'
The club commenced fundraising in 2007 and over the past decade couldn't have come this far without the support of local community and businesses who responded to every call and assisted in every way to make a dream become a reality. The location of the new pitch fits perfectly in with the transformation of Elderberry Drive over the past five years and the club is committed to continue to develop and assist in making the area a community space for all to enjoy. This commitment from the club also comes as they announce plans to give a section of the new grounds over to Moneygall Development Association for the use of a Community Garden and they hope to continue to build on the facilities the club can offer the wider community not just for sports.
The club will celebrate the opening on June 17th at 2.30p.m. with kick off of the inaugural game at 3.30p.m. Entry to the game will be €10 for Adults, Students €5 and Children U-12 free. The grounds will close an hour after the game and celebrations will recommence from 7.30p.m. when the Marquee and licenced bar open on the grounds with entertainment from Darren Brown and his band Remix. This event is strictly over eighteens and entry is €10 on the night.
