Attention returns to county championships this weekend

Thursday, 10 August 2017

THE action is all focused on club level from here on with the final round of group games in the Tipperary Water County Senior and Intermediate Hurling Championships and Seamus O Riain Cup taking place this weekend.
The Dan Breen will take many twists and turns with four groups in action. The top two teams in each group will contest the quarter finals. However if a team wins a divisional title and don't make the top two they will get a chance to advance in a preliminary quarter final game.
The teams finishing in fourth position in the respective groups will contest a round robin relegation battle with the bottom two dropping to the Seamus O'Riain Cup for 2018.
Of the North Tipp teams, Kiladangan, Borris-Ileigh, Nenagh Eire Og and Kilruane MacDonaghs look the best prospects to advance to the last eight. Kilruane are definitely through as they face Carrick Swans in their final game and they are expected win handsomely. It will be a battle for Kiladangan and Borris-Ileigh while Ballina, Portroe and Burgess have very outside chances.

Group 3
As we said Kilruane have just one game to play when they face Carrick Swans at Cashel on Saturday and the North club is odds on to win. The other game in Group 3 sees Nenagh Eire Og take on Thurles Sarsfields at Templemore at 12 noon . Even if Nenagh win, their points difference appears to be too weak to see them through
Group 1
The group of death has certainly lived up to its name. Next weekend Loughmore Castleiney take on Kiladangan in Dolla on Saturday throw in 7pm and at the same time Upperchurch Drombane face Borris-Ileigh in Semple Stadium. The four teams have a chance of qualifying.
Group 2
The likelihood of Portroe overcoming Clonoulty Rossmore in their final game at Dolla is remote. At any rate they will need to win by at least fourteen points to have any chance of advancing. It's the same story for Ballina who will push Seamus Callanan's Drom Inch at Cloughjordan. Both teams have a 5.30pm throw in time. Clonoulty and Drom Inch should advance.
Group 4
With full points from two games, Killenaule are definitely through but the race for the other place is wide open. Eire Og Anacarty are in second place but they have a tough nut to crack when they take on Burgess at Semple Stadium throw in 5.30pm. It's winner takes all unless Mullinahone slip one past Killenaule. It's so close to call.
Seamus O'Riain Cup
The top two teams in each group will contest the quarter finals. The teams finishing in fourth position in the respective groups will contest a round robin relegation battle with the bottom two dropping to Intermediate ranks.
Group 1
Toomevara are home and hosed as they face Newport in their final game at Nenagh on Sunday at noon. Roscrea take on Ballingarry in The Ragg also at noon the same day and they should win and make the last eight to contest the knockout stages.
Group 2
Templederry are through with full points from two games. This leaves the outstanding game between Silvermines and Moycarkey Borris. The winner survives in senior for 2018 while the loser face a relegation battle.
Group 3
With J K Brackens sitting on top of Group 3, the runners up spot will come from the winner of this weekend's encounter between Clonakenny and Borrisokane in the last game.
Group 4
Holycross are safely through to be joined by the winners of Lorrha and Knockavilla as they battle it out at Nenagh throw in 1.30pm.
County IHC
After Moneygall's 3-14 to 0-13 win over Kiladangan in the Denis Meats North Tipperary Intermediate hurling semi final last Saturday, the action turns to the final round of the Co IHC as Moneygall take on Roscrea at Cloughjordan on Saturday evening. Elsewhere Kiladangan will take on Latten Cullen Gaels and Ballinahinch face Golden Kilfeacle while over in Templederry, Shannon Rovers take on Cashel. The five teams will hope to win to advance to the knockout stages.
