West awake as Portumna's Canning Cousins to forefront in Galway double thumbnailCousins Jack and Joe Canning celebrating after Galway on the All Ireland minor and senior hurling double in Croke Park last Sunday.

GALWAY made history on Sunday when they captured both the All Ireland senior and minor All Ireland hurling championships at Croke Park.

The Minors continued the County's fine tradition at the grade while the seniors landed the Liam McCarthy cup for the first time in 29 years.

Portumna cousins - Jack and Joe Canning were to the fore with minor star Jack picking up the man of the match award in the Minor decider after scoring 2-2 in a powerful second half display.

Also a talented Rugby player, Jack Canning attended Cistercian College in Roscrea and played a prominent role in Rugby and hurling success down through the years in the School.

In the main event last Sunday, the great Joe Canning was once again leading from the front with nine points as Galway beat Waterford to land the Liam McCarthy cup.

Before Sunday, he was widely regarded as one of the best players to have not won an All Ireland medal but now that is put to bed.

Both minor and senior panels received a massive welcome back to Galway on Monday evening with stops in Ballinasloe and Salthill.

They are expected to make their way around the County in the coming days.
