THERE was fantastic support from people around the parish of Lorrha who gathered to watch the county U-12 'B' hurling final in Dundrum two weeks ago.
This game was contested by Lorrha Dorrha, the North champions and Fr Sheehys, the South champions. It was a nervy start with Fr Sheehys off the mark first with an Oisin Ryan free. Then Sheehy's doubled their lead with a shot at goal but it was brilliantly saved by Lorrha net minder Con O'Meara and resulted in a point.
Lorrha then opened their account with a Conor Kennedy free. Oisin Ryan however dropped over a free but from then on it was all Lorrha. Conor Kennedy and Celine Guinan pointed to level the sides soon after. Celine Guinan sent over a '65' before the moment came for Lorrha. Robert Duffy brilliantly picked up the ball in a ruck and hand passed to Conor Kennedy who finished powerfully into the bottom corner of the Fr Sheehy's net.
Rory Duffy in midfield showed great skill and determination settling his team in the first half. Conor Kennedy gave some entertainment to the Lorrha crowd who cheered on the side as Kennedy extended the Lorrha lead with a well taken point. Tom Perry and Dermot Houlihan up front took ever opportunity for a shot at Sheehy's goal. Cathal Egan however responded to keep Sheehys in contact but Lorrha's Conor Kennedy split the uprights in reply just before the break and Lorrha led by five points at the interval, Lorrha-1-6 Fr Sheehy's 0-4.
The second half was very entertaining with lots of last minute drama occurring. Sheehy's brought the sides closer scoring a point soon after the resumption but Celine Guinan replied with two points for Lorrha. There would be a long period without scores from either side with great defending from the Lorrha full backline duo of Lee Hogan and Fergus O'Donoughue. Liam Donoughue worked tirelessly in defence keeping the ball fed into the forward line where Robert Duffy and Paul Cahalan stepped up to the mark in this hard fought contest. From the bench, John O'Meara and Jake Houihan came in fighting for every ball. Marking was close and a high Sheehy's ball came in from out field where Oisin Ryan worked hard to get the ball over the line and suddenly, their great lead was down to a very dangerous two points with time running out. Sheehys upped their performance and digging deep to leave just one point between the sides with time up.
There was massive rejoicing and great relief at the sound of the final whistle as Lorrha knew that not only was the game over, but they were now county champions by the narrowest of margins, 1-8 to 1-7 and Lorrha's brilliant work in defence really paid off.
