Kiely red card takes gloss off fantastic Kilcormac/Killoughey win

Thursday, 23 November 2017

KILCORMAC/Killoughey advanced to the Leinster Club Senior Hurling Championship final with one of their truly great performances on Sunday last but the gloss was taken off another wise glorious afternoon by a red card for their star midfielder, Cillian Kiely.

Kiely saw red five minutes from the break after a clash with Mount Leinster Rangers midfielder, Diarmuid Byrne that was spotted by an umpire and he now looks certain to miss their final in Portlaoise on Sunday week with Dublin kingpins and All-Ireland champions, Cuala.

Kilcormac/Killoughey, Leinster champions in 2012, will be underdogs for that game against the current holders and the absence of Kiely greatly damages their prospects.

Ironically, the departure of Kiely co-incided with Kilcormac/Killoughey producing their best hurling in Sunday's semi-final in Bord na Mona O'Connor Park. K/K were leading by 0-6 to 0-4 and engaged in a ferocious dogfight when Kiely walked but they took off after that. A James Gorman goal in the 26th minute brought the large home crowd to their feet as K/K stormed into a 1-8 to 0-4 interval lead.

By the 41st minute it was all over bar the shouting as the winners ripped the Carlow champions apart. With James Gorman hiting four of their opening six second half points and Dan Currams - his return to his top form has been a huge bonus for K/K this year -, converting a great goal, they went 2-15 to 0-6 ahead and they closed out the match very comfortably from here for a 2-21 to 010 win.

It was a fantastic performance by Kilcormac/Killoughey, whose intensity, pace and quality left their opponents floundering - the numbers were evened up when Mount Leinster centre back, David Phelan was red carded with seventeen minutes left.

Mount Leinster, however, appeared to be a very average side and Cuala will present a very different challenge on Sunday week.
