Offaly Masters 1998 3-4

A BUMPER crowd flocked to Rath on Saturday evening last as the Offaly All Ireland Senior Hurling Championship winning heroes of 1994 and 1998 locked horns in a novel fundraiser.

The Drumcullen club have been extremely active in recent months with participants in their big 'I'm a celebrity, get me out of here', all holding their own fundraising events in the lead up to the big finale in May.

With a walking track to go around the pitch in Rath and a new covered, astro turf area for training already under construction, the club are putting a big push on to raise funds for these projects and indeed other work that may come on stream.

The game could hardly be described as a thrilling draw but it was definitely one of the most enjoyable evenings enjoyed by a huge crowd in Rath on Saturday evening.

Sean Guinan, a former club secretary, as part of his 'Celebrity' fundraiser organised a match between the heroes of '94 and '98 and others.

Many of these great players turned out and with a highly entertaining commentary by Brian Gavin, assisted by his accomplices Johnny Flaherty and Pat Fleury, fun was the order of the day.

Having said so we were also treated to some of the skills and abilities of players who have rightly become folk heroes at home and beyond.

Great credit is due to Sean and his organising committee and also to the club committee who assisted with arrangements on the day.

The Drumcullen club would like to thank all the players who contributed to such a memorable evening; the two referees Shane Guinan and Kieran Dooley; Johnny Butterfield and the other members of the Mountbolus Pipe Band who led the players in parade; the Drumcullen U13 players who provided an entertaining curtain-raiser; the ladies and gentlemen who provided refreshments; those assisting with car-parking and turnstiles and those who provided sponsorship in various ways and of course those mentioned above.

The Liam McCarthy Cup was also there - on temporary release thanks to Pat Fleury and proved an attractive presence for young and older.

Fundraising events are still ongoing from participants in the 'I'm a celebrity fundraiser' and details of upcoming events can be found on their social media channels and in their club notes.
