For the second time in six years, the students from Cistercian College Roscrea have won the All Ireland German Debating Competition, organised by the Goethe-Institut Irland (the German Culture Institute) and sponsored by Siemens. The competition is in its 23nd year.
The debate offers the students the opportunity to use and expand their German language skills and develop confidence, team work and debating skills. Also, students get to meet their peers from all over Ireland in a competitive language environment.
This year 39 school teams entered the competition. In the final Cistercian College Roscrea debated against Scoil Mhuire Trim. The motion for the final: Europe needs a more active youth.
In addition to being overall winners the captain, Manus Heenan, was awarded best overall speaker. The students were coached by their German teacher, Ms Niamh O’Rourke and their language assistant, Ms Anna Hackethal.
